Our history

The Dance 'La sautiere' in 1999

Created in 1946 by a group of teachers, the band's original name was "Le cercle de l'enseignement". In 1970 the band changed its name to Les Goublins. Goublins are mischievous little creatures haunting farms and country side.

The main purpose of the band is to showcase ancient folklore, including songs of the working man, evening songs, dances and everyday songs of our ancestors, who were most often attired in small regional headress and clogs, rather than the more grandiose headress and leather shoes.

We present ourselves as an arts and popular traditions group, playing music handed down orally over the years and existing only in people's memories. A great deal of research work was undertaken in our area and all of this knowledge passed on to the art and popular museum located in Caen in Normandy.

A variety of shows have been created in famous places such as farms and manor houses, leaving behind memories that will last forever. But we also adapted to new demands such as midsummer day, school fetes, conventions and weddings.

The band had to expand its musical repertoire in order to offer a variety of entertainment and to encourage people to dance.

Our aim is to stay in contact with French folklore associations and to organise events such as public dances, concerts, dance workshops, by inviting various musical groups from different regions and countries (Contredanses in 1990, Bourrées in 1996, Québéc dances in 1997, Breton dances en 1998, Irish dances en 2000, Cajun en 2001, Romania en 2002, Appalachian dances en 2003, Italian dances en 2004, and Welsh dances in 2005). See our Photos.

Since 1997 we have also conducted a dance workshop on the last friday of each month. The purpose of this course is to allow people to discover the traditional dances of many French regions and other countries. Everyone is welcome, and the course is currently attended by 40 dancers. Since 2002 we have also conducted an advanced workshop on the 3rd friday of each month, during which time more complex and varied dances are taught.

Musiciens during CD Recording Albert's studio The musiciens

At the present time, the band has more musicians than ever before, that in itself is no small feat. Today's musical instruments have been adapted to best interpret the traditional music of a bygone era : Hurdy-gurdy, Bagpipe, Clarinet, Fiddle, Diatonic Accordion, Guitare, Percussion.

This was a fabulous opportunity for us, and due to public demand, we decide to record a CD . For this CD we have chosen to record only dance music such as Polka, Mazurka, Waltz, Andro, Hanter dro, Bourrée, Maraîchines, Rondo, Circassien Circle, etc...

This is a major event for the band as it was the first time that the musicians performed together to produce a cd ( a vynil record was produced in 1970 featuring just 4 traditional Norman songs ).

The title of the CD is "Pied au plancher" and was recorded in 2002 at the Albert's Studio located in "Sainte Mère l'église". You can buy it either at the "Forum" in cherbourg, or by contacting The Goublins' president.
